Background

Oregon is undergoing rapid and massive sociodemographic changes and becoming increasingly pluralistic. Within this context, universities must respond to these changes by ensuring equitable access to educational opportunities by the next generation, committing to an educational excellence mission in which diversity and inclusion are fully integrated, and maintaining a steadfast focus on doing all that is possible to ensure inclusive and welcoming multicultural learning environments.

In advancing these goals, the purpose of this summit is to bring together diversity officers and practitioners from throughout the Oregon public university system to: (1) identify shared challenges and opportunities, (2) identify and circulate best and promising practices, (3) foster cross-institutional networking and collaboration, and (4) inform and influence system-level policies and practices that advance institutional diversity goals.

Summit Highlights:
  • Keynote presentation by Dr. Damon A. Williams, Vice Provost and Chief Diversity Officer, University of Wisconsin, Madison in diversity organizational development and best practices in higher education
  • Topical panel sessions:
  • Diversity Assessment: How Do We Know We Are Succeeding?
  • Sitting at the Table: Creating an Inclusive Campus Climate
  • Beyond the Usual Suspects: Building Alliances and Nurturing Shared Ownership for Diversity
  • Focused discussion to develop shared strategies for taking action in each topic areas from within and across the public university system
  • Forum to identify mechanisms to develop and sustain efforts to share best practices across institutions
