About the Martin Luther King, Jr Awards
The University of Oregon Martin Luther King, Jr. Award was originally established to honor often under-recognized classified staff whose various activities and achievements represent consistent efforts to make this campus a welcoming place for all to live, work and learn. Since its founding, the award has been expanded to include recognition of university faculty and officers of administration whose contributions to the campus community, beyond typical job expectations, also uphold and exemplify ideals supported by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Award recipients have acted to make the university a better place in any or all of the following ways:
- Welcoming all people into the university community by embodying the humanitarian spirit exemplified in Dr. King's life and work
- Setting a caring example by building morale and showing compassion toward others amidst the realities of our complicated bureaucracy
- Working diligently toward cultural diversity and the promotion of cultural awareness to reduce the broad spectrum of social tensions on campus
- Promoting diversity, social justice and equity on the University of Oregon campus
- Demonstrating moral courage, adherence to principles of non-violence, and dedication to the ideal of social harmony in our society
The importance to our campus community of the principles recognized by this award cannot be overestimated.
