Dr. Emilio Hernandez, Jr.
Dr. Emilio Hernandez, Jr. is an Assistant Vice President in the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity. He joined OIED at the beginning of 2006. Prior to this appointment, he was director of the University of Oregon High School Equivalency Program, (HEP) for 13 years, assisting migrant/seasonal farm workers who have not completed their high school work to obtain their GED, and providing guidance for participants into higher education or the workforce.
Dr. Hernandez received his Master of Science in Public Administration and Management from the University of Oregon in 1984. He also received his Bachelor of Science in Community Service and Public Affairs from the University of Oregon in 1974. He received his Doctorate in Higher Education Administration in 2005 from the University of Oregon.
Dr. Hernandez is the oldest of six siblings who all reside in Oregon. His parents also reside in Oregon. The Hernandez family comes from a migrant farm worker background. Both parents were born in Texas, but moved to Montana to harvest crops. Emilio and his brothers were born in Montana, but the family followed migrant farm worker jobs to Oregon, where his father obtained work with the Southern Pacific Railroad. He was stationed in Toledo, Oregon, were Emilio's sisters were born. Emilio started school in Toledo. Dr. Hernandez learned English while he attended school, and his mother learned English at the same time. When he was in high school, Emilio attended the Upward Bound Program at Oregon State University. After completing the Program he began his studies at the University of Oregon.
Emilio has served on various migrant and at-risk youth committees locally, regionally and nationally. He also served as only the second Latino appointed to the Oregon State Board of Education. He has assisted in crafting local and national migrant education white papers and training manuals for HEP and Title One programs. He has also assisted in the Oregon Hispanic and Migrant Leadership Institute as Director and trainer of staff. He continues to work widely with Oregon’s nine Indian Tribes on educational issues from pre-K through higher education. He continues to encourage and assist low-income students who want to continue their educational goals.
